Festivities of Moors and Christians.

The Festival of Moors and Christians of the city of Murcia was born as such in 1983.

Its gestation took place in 1981 on the occasion of the commemorative acts of the Foundation of Murcia, event happened on April 21 of the year 831.

It was celebrated thanks to the efforts of the Murcia section of the Association of Friends of Castles in collaboration with the Defense of the Heritage of the Region of Murcia.

They managed to interest various Administration Agencies to get a worthy party (the city’s birthday), which was certainly achieved.

In the year 1982

They paraded the Moors and Christians of Orihuela and given the approval of the Murcians, it was insistently requested that in successive years this party will last.

In June of 1983 the Association of Feasts was created and that same year, in  September, the own parades began.

The founding groups

Five were the founding groups of this Association: Mudéjares, Abderramán II, Ib-Arabí, Aben-Mardenix, for the Moorish side and the Knights of the Temple, for the Christian.

In that first parade of the year 1983, the support of groups from Abanilla and Orihuela was received.

Throughout these years of existence some  groups have been created and some have disappeared.

Nowadays

This Federation is composed of eight Cábilas and seven Mesnadas.

The celebration of Moors and Christians (Moors and Christians) is part of the festive events of the Murcia Fair of 2018.

It has been declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest and commemorates the founding of the city of Murcia.

It has the peculiarity that the victory of Christians over the Moors is not celebrated, so no struggle is staged.

There is a Christian leader and a Moorish leader who are Infante Alfonso de Castilla and King Ibn Hud Baha Al-Dawla. Saturday, September 8, 2018 is the “Day of the Entrance”, where most of the groups parade through the neighborhoods of the city. When the night comes, the groups led by Infante Alfonso de Castilla and King Moro Aben Hud of Murcia offer a show as a military stop. In short, a whole week of festivities where the central days are Saturday, Sunday and Monday before the Pilgrimage of the Virgen de la Fuensanta, the patron saint of the city of Murcia.
